Every family should prepare a plan and practice home evacuation. This needs to be a family activity so everyone understands exactly what needs to happen in case of an emergency. - Step 1
- If there is a fire, keep calm.
- Do NOT panic!
- Yell loudly to let family members know you are all right.
- Do NOT hide!
- Step 2
- Feel the door with the back of your hand before you open.
- If the door is cool, open it carefully.
- If the door is hot, do NOT open it.
- Exit through the window.
- Step 3
- If your room is filled with smoke, keep down close to the floor so you can breathe more easily.
- NEVER go back inside a burning building.
- Step 4
- Go to the meeting place the family has picked outside the house, and then call 911.
Check This Fire Prevention List If you answer NO to anything on this list, be sure to correct the problem. Review this list regularly. 1. Is your local emergency phone number on your telephone? 2. Can your house number be seen from the street so emergency vehicles can find you? 3. Do you have a smoke detector in your home? 4. Do you test your smoke detector monthly? Helpful hint: Change the batteries when you change your clocks - in the spring and fall. 5. Do you practice Operation EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home) at home? 6. Do your babysitters know about the family EDITH plan? 7. Is there a fire extinguisher in your home? Does everyone know where it is and how to use it? 8. Are matches and lighters kept in a safe place away from children? 9. Do you know that you should never run if your clothes catch on fire and that you should STOP - DROP - ROLL? 10. Do you have a screen on your fireplace? Is it closed at all times? 11. Is your yard clear of old tree branches, litter, and weeds? 12. Do you sleep with your bedroom door closed to prevent the spread of fire?
